Our Inner Children

If I could get our inner children together

for a playdate on a summer day,

I’d take them to the zoo

and maybe out for a pizza date.

We’d get ice cream and play ISpy

and I’d hug then extra tight

to make sure they know

everything’s gonna be alright.

That one day all the pain

will lead us to each other

and we’ll teach each other how to love,

how to heal from all those wounds.

That past trauma and heartache

doesn’t have to change your view

on how love is supposed to look

or a way it’s supposed to be.

That we can be two kids

dancing at the zoo or playing silly games.

Our future is what we make of it,

and the best parts of our past

are the blocks on which we build it.

So our inner children can come out of hiding

and make themselves at home.

Within these walls it’s safe,

because we made it out of love.
